Monday, April 4, 2011

Today we turned in the paper where we compared the articles and also another paper about what we have learned, what we remember, how did we benefit. This paper is going to replace the grade for the last group presentation.
We also got into groups to discuss our thoughts about each topic that was presented. The group came out with a brief summary of what we think about the articles we read, and then we wrote those comments/statements on the board in each category/topic that Dr. Phillips wrote.

Friday, April 1, 2011

Lecture: Gabriel Perez (group 6) presented his article to the class & explained a program called turnitin which professors use to check if essays are plagiarized. His presentation included definitions of plagiarism, a video of how turnitin works, connections of his article with the previous articles from his group, and ways to avoid plagiarism. Homework: A concept map/Venn diagram is due monday, it must be printed & NOT submitted through email. You have to take it to class and you will get points for attendance & bringing the work. The map is NOT just over plagiarism, it should compare ALL the topics we have covered so far; you can compare them all at the same time or by groups. You should also include what you learned/main ideas from each topic individually, it can be done in sentences or paragraph form.

Wednesday 30

Hi everyone, Yesterday in class we disscused group's 6 article (Kimberly's). Intellectual property rights: conceptual awareness of research students about plagiarism. In the article it talked about the different types of plagiarism and how each of them has a different meaning, and no matter what the excuse is, plagiarism is plagiarism; wanting or not wanting to plagiaris. She gave us many good examples of plagiarism, one of them the article she had written with other of her classmates, she explained what had happened with the professor. Well this is all that was done on Wednesday. Nelly E. Martinez P.S. Sorry I didn't post this on Wednesday, I was having trouble with my computer.

hi everyone, today in class we discussed the article entitled "The Writing Approaches of University Students" on revision. we discussed the meaning of some key vocabulary from the article and the main points that we covered was the various writing approaches. these include the "elaborative", "low self-Efficiency", "reflective revision", "spontaneous-impulsive", and the last one "procedural". we talked about which method we thought we used individually and if there is a place for all of them in different situations or if there was only one correct way. there is more information about this in the article. as well just a reminder to be prepared for class on friday with the last article for group 5 on revision. also Dr. Phillips would like me to remind you that after this week there will only be one group left to present so if you feel yourself starting to get annoyed or bored with all this reading please push through it. just one more week!! :) remember the semester is almost over!!! hope this was helpful, if there are any questions please feel free to let me know and i will get back to you as fast as i can :)

03/21/2011 Monday

Hey guys,

Today we discussed group 5 1st article "Research on Revision in Writing" they presented two videos that give some advise of the helpful that revision it’s such as that someone else read our paper it can be someone that knows the topic or someone that don’t know; however, both types of revision will be useful.
During their presentation they mention some problems that students have; for example, that we have difficulties in making change to our paper because we do not know how to revise or we do not want to modify anything because we feel that we change the meaning of the paper. In conclusion, we can revise everything because is a process to correct our grammar and ideas mistakes.
For the next class we need to read the second article "The writing approaches of university students"

February 23rd 2011

Hey guys, Ruben here.

Today in class, Group 3 presented their article. After they finished there was still some time left, and Dr. Phillips decided to go over the way she wanted the synthesis paper for groups 3 and 4 to be.

She basically wants a ven diagram, in which we take the three articles and put unique points from each article in each circle, then, in the overlapping areas you put points that are similar from the articles. Outside of the ven diagram, she wanted us to put down some points that were different.

And that's pretty much all you missed, of course, the Synthesis paper for Group 2 is due before Monday (2/28), and the Ven Diagram for group 3 is due before the following Monday(3/7).

And, lastly, on Friday group 3 will be presenting their last article so be ready for that as well.

On Friday we went over Group 2 last article and went over what past tense, present tense and perfect present citations was again. We took down notes and examples of these types of citations. If you were absent then ask someone for their notes on the types of citations. Dr. Phillips moved the date of the synthesis paper from Friday 2/18 to Sunday 2/20. You need to submit the paper through google documents like we have been doing for the articles. If you still don't know how to upload to google docs then refer to the previous blogs or email or call Dr. Phillips. Don't forget to read and take notes and particpate in class with Group 3 article.

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

February 16, 2011

Today we discussed the second article for group two, Tense Choices in Citations by Hawes. It was an in class grade to have read it, and if you were absent, I don't believe you can make it up. Dr. Phillips wrote notes on the board about past, present, and perfect present tense. If you were absent, you could ask someone if you could borrow the notes. Read last article for group two for Friday's class. Remember, it's an in class grade.

Our First Synthesis Paper

Our synthesis paper will consist of a three part outline of all the articles discussed for Student Voice.

Section I:
Section one will be the introduction that should include our own general thoughts on student voice as dicussed during the week.
Section II:
Section two will be the body of the paper that will include in-text citations.  This will be taking specific points of each article, discuss them and give a page reference (also paraphrase or quote it).  The body has to include our own thoughts not only citations which should be about 60% of our own analysis.  Using sub-headings will be helpful to refocus the reader and emphasize your point.
Make comparisons between all articles, suggestions:
  • Similar points, themes, messages, recommendations, challenges, issues, etc.
  • Through your own perspective you can engage to say the things they didn't address
  • From agreements and disagreements of all the articles
Section III:
Section three will be our conclusion were we reflect our own thoughts as a writer and describe how they relate to the main topic we discussed for the week.

January 31, 2011

Today in class we continued the metaphor presentations.

Dr. Phillips also began talking to us about the group projects in detail. She also mentioned if you are having difficulty looking for articles to check blogger for examples.

During the group projects the presenter and the reader will be assigned to do two different tasks:

Presenter- must pick 4 articles and let the class know when and what they need to read. Each person in the group needs to contribute to the leading discussion :

· Handouts àdiscussion questions or passages/excerpts you find important or interesting.

à Theory/research

àComparison with students

· Power point

· Additional/ related info

It just needs to be something concrete to expand on what we are reading.

Readers Role- MUST PRINT THE ARTICLES AND BRING THEM TO CLASS!! You also must write notes in the margin. (that is to help you with the verbal contribution in the discussion). The reader will also be creating a synthesis/ reader response/ chart, so you must read the articles.

Dr. Phillips will continue to discuss more about the projects so she said attendance to class on Wednesday and Friday is very important.

*Oh and for the groups who are not presenting you can still turn in articles for extra credit up until you present.*

No Class Today: Friday, January 28

Hi.

My sons are home sick today, so I will need to cancel class. See you Monday. We will talk about the posting of Group One's articles for the class to read on Monday.

Everyone else should find their article by Monday so that you can meet with your group on Monday in class and talk about what you found. If you are unsure of what to look for, I suggest you look at the sample articles I posted on the blog...

Have a good weekend. If you have any questions, let me know.

See you Monday.

January 26, 2011

In the beginning of class Dr.Phillips discussed our first grade (which would be our metaphor presentations) on Blackboard. She basically went over on how to find out your grade by adding the points you have in total for each assignment and dividing it by the number of assignments.

She went over on what to look for in the articles related to our subject.
When choosing your article, think about:
1. Does or will this article expand people's knowledge over the subject?
2. Is there something useful that any writer can take out of the article you chose?
***VERY IMPORTANT*** when saving your article, you must save it as a pdf file!!!!
***ALSO VERY IMPORTANT***make sure Dr.Phillips has your article a week before your presentation to the class.

You MUST e-mail your article to her! Here all the following steps if you're still having trouble sending her a message:
1. Login with the Google account you created.
2. Go to "My Account"
3. Scroll down to “Documents”
4. Then go to “upload” then select file
5. Then click “start upload”
6. Then go back to Google docs and it should be there, if you can’t see it, then make sure you are on the section “owned by me”
7. Then you click “share” then “share settings” and change it to “anyone with a link”, then you scroll down and click “send copy to myself”
8. Then you click “Share”

**Overall today we just did our metaphor presentations, which we will continue on our next class meeting Friday, January 28th**

January 21

Today, in class, we talked about how you should already have access to the class blog and have made your gmail account already. If you haven't done so, you should do that ASAP. Dr. Phillips also gave us her email and cell phone number just in case we ever have questions about our assignments.

(956) 342-6770
phillipssk@utpa.edu

In your gmail account, it should consist of:
first name, last name, course number, and class time or section number.

By Monday you should have already picked your top 3 mini topics so you can be placed in a group. BUT make sure to email your choices to Dr. Phillips BEFORE Monday. The topics are on the class blog so you can choose. If you wish to do a topic other than the ones that are listed, make sure that it is still writing related.

Also, we will begin metaphor presentations on Monday.

Thursday, January 20, 2011

is anyone else having issues trying to get to the syllabus?? it sends me to an error page every time :/ if anyone can help me it would be great!

what we talked about in class Jan.19 2011

Hi guys,
Today in class we talked about numerous things. Dr. Phillips had us all give her our email so she can send us an invite to the class blog, which we should have all gotten already. In order to have a class blog you will need to create a Gmail Account. When signing up for your Gmail account, your email address should be able to identify you so Dr. Phillips knows who she’s getting it from.
Ex: (your name1302.945@gmail.com)

After you have done that you can go ahead and send her an email from there as a “test” since this is how we would be sending her our assignments. here are the steps to do that once you have logged in.

1. Click the documents on the top left hand corner
2. Click upload
3. Then select a file
4. Start upload
5. Then press, Go back to Google docs
6. Click on your document
7. Then press share
8. Then share settings
9. Then press change, and put send as link
10. Do anyone with a link, then save
11. Go to add people, and then send to Dr. Phillips email address (phillipssk@utpa.edu).

I might have gone through this a little fast and it may be confusing but if you have any question feel free to ask. We also talked about project one which we will start doing on Friday Jan.21 the project consist of the following since we will be doing it in groups
Project One (Metaphor Presentation)
• Writing Experiences
• Thought on Writing
• How they see themselves as writers.

This about sums it up, remember if you have any questions feel free to ask.
